What should I expect at my appointment?

Your session will be one hour long and will take place in a comfortable, private studio. You can expect a friendly, professional and supportive environment. At your first appointment, the instructor will ask you some questions about your health history and discuss your goals. Your specific program will be tailored to your needs and capabilities and will progress along with you. You can expect to utilize a variety of equipment. If you have experience with other forms of exercise, you'll notice distinct differences right away. You'll almost certainly leave the session feeling refreshed and relaxed.

What should I wear?

You should wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. You won't be wearing shoes, so no sneakers are necessary. Socks are requested.

I've heard Pilates is really hard...is that true?

Pilates is tailored to your ability level. You can expect to be able to perform the exercises comfortably. As your strength and flexibility increases, more challenging exercises will be introduced.

How is Pilates different from a regular aerobics class, traditional weight training, or yoga?

Pilates emphasizes core strength. It does not move as fast as an aerobics class...it is not an aerobic exercise. Unlike yoga, there are no static postures in Pilates. Private instruction on Pilates equipment provides resistance, just like weight training. It is different, however, in that it does not isolate muscle groups. Rather, it teaches all of the muscles to work efficiently together.

How often should I do Pilates?

It is recommended that Pilates exercises be performed at least twice a week when possible. The more often you perform Pilates, the more benefit you will experience.

Can I do Pilates if...?

If you have a preexisting condition that you think might interfere with your ability to perform Pilates, you should discuss it with your doctor first. It is recommended that you consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Pilates is a good exercise choice for people of almost any condition, so it is likely that you can participate.
