The Cumbo, Inc. Training Philosophy

Skill training requires a real commitment, both from the participant as well as the organization. Why? Changes in skills, behaviors, abilities, and cultures simply do not happen overnight.

Each of Cumbo, Inc.'s training programs is designed with the adult learner in mind. They are challenging but fun, and create instant relevance to the participant's everyday work challenges. Sessions are delivered in a high-energy, hands-on way that seeks to involve the student's mind, body, and heart. All of our programs combine a number of techniques ranging from the experiential to the analytical, the introspective to the participative. This practice encourages every participant to be wholly and completely engaged. People learn and think in different ways; our programs are designed to accommodate this natural diversity.

Real success from a training session is measured in practical results. Our programs focus on finding the connection between the material and the individual, changing dynamically to adapt to the real person who is in the room.

We will always be honest with clients in regard to our recommendations for session duration, class size limitations, and agenda modifications. The goal is to experience real learning that is genuinely meaningful and memorable.

Current Program Offerings

In addition to the classes listed below, it is possible to customize a program designed with the unique learning needs of your organization in mind. This may the take form of a combination of various programs, or a completely personalized session complete with one-of-a-kind objectives.

Essential Presentation Skills
This program goes well beyond the ordinary in terms of developing sophisticated presenters who are prepared to engage and persuade audiences. Participants will learn and experience techniques that address the full spectrum of powerful speaking skills. This class is filled with multiple speaking opportunities, highly individual coaching and feedback, and group exercises. Program elements will focus on the individual, personal obstacles, verbal and nonverbal techniques, audience assessment, movement, audiovisuals, vocal enhancement, and more. An intense class that will leave participants motivated and self-confident!

Breakthrough Thinking
"Creativity" is an often misunderstood phenomena. More than just a raw talent owned by a select few, creativity is a skill that can be enhanced by learning and practicing techniques designed to help the brain think in new ways. During this session, participants will achieve a better understanding of their personal thinking style and that of their team. In addition, they will practice hands-on activities that relate to the creative problem solving process. Demonstrations of the applicability of these exercises will help students understand how to use what is learned to achieve faster, more innovative results back on the job. Emphasis is placed both on achieving novelty and learning how to evaluate the worthiness of ideas - quickly. This class is high-energy and lots of fun!

Conflict Management and Resolution
As a part of this program, participants are asked for their personal definition of conflict. Invariably, a list of negative words and associations is revealed. In this session, conflict is treated as neither positive nor negative, but rather a simple and very real part of our daily lives. The group will complete an assessment that will help them to better understand their personal approach to conflict, and be taught ways to more masterfully deal with conflict situations. Variations on this program include role playing, assessment of real conflict issues in the organization, and a segment on how interpersonal communication skills affect instigation and resolution.

Improvisation
This is a training program that is equal parts fun and learning! Lead by comic improvisation masters, participants will discover how the essential skills used by improvisers apply to enhanced communication skills, spontaneity, creativity, group cohesion, decision making speed, and more. The focus of this program is able to shift based on the need of the client - emphasis can be placed, for example, on communication skills, listening skills, creative skills, etc. A very engaging program that students may not wish to leave.

Powerful Memory
This very unique training program is designed to help participants learn to unlock the amazing abilities of their memory. This class won't put a camera in your brain, but it will teach genuine and effective techniques for remembering information such as (the always difficult) names of people you've just met! This program is a workout for your mind and your imagination. Application of the techniques taught can yield quick and lasting results.

Facilitation Skills
An extension of presentation skills that goes beyond the efficacy of the speaker as a communicator, to the capability of a designated facilitator. Emphasis is placed on understanding the role of a facilitator (and how it is different than that of a presenter), working with groups as a process versus content expert, handling audiences, and materials.

         

Meeting Skills
Effective meetings are not an accident. They are the result of careful planning and the usage of procedural guidelines designed to make meeting time useful. During this program, participants will be exposed to better ways of holding and planning meetings - resulting in less wasted time, faster decision making, more concrete follow-through, and greater morale by meeting-weary employees. Topics covered include agendas, groundrules, facilitation/presenter guidelines, group selection and management, documentation, meeting space use, and so on. This is an excellent session to customize for your organization's particular meeting improvement needs, and can be used to develop specific guidelines for your team to follow.

Change Management
It is cliché to say "the only constant is change," however, it became a
cliché because of the simple fact...that it's true! Furthermore, change in an organization is not just a side effect of doing business - it is the goal of doing business. Innovation, maturation, increased profitability...all are examples of change. In this session, the group will explore their responses to change. Experiential techniques will help demonstrate the constancy of change in your organization. The roles we play when change occurs and the control we have over our response are highlights of this program.
